(photo by jb) The humble city of Greensboro, North Carolina (pop. 277,000) will become “gymnastics central” for a week when the Greensboro Coliseum Complex hosts a regional, a national and an international gymnastics competition over five days from February 26 to March 2.
The star attraction is the AT&T American Cup, an international elite invitational competition for select all-arounders from across the globe, and part of the FIG World Cup series. Competing this year will be (according to USA Gymnastics, as of 1/28/14):
Canada – Victoria Moors
Germany – Sophie Scheder
Italy – Carlotta Ferlito
Italy – Vanessa Ferrari
Romania – Larisa Andrea Iordache
Spain – Roxana Popa Nedelcu
Switzerland – Giulia Steingruber
USA – Simone Biles, Spring, Texas/Bannon’s Gymnastix
USA – Elizabeth Price, Coopersburg, Pa./Parkettes National Gymnastics Center
Belarus – Andrey Likhovitskiy
Brazil – Sergio Sasaki Junior
Germany – Fabian Hambuechen
Great Britain – Sam Oldham

USA – John Orozco, Bronx, N.Y./Team Hilton Honors (U.S. Olympic Training Center)
The day before the American Cup, the 5th Annual Nastia Liukin Cup will be held, a JO competition for select juniors and seniors up to level 10 who earn their spots in the competition through a series of club invitationals around the country in January and February, such as the WOGA Classic and the Parkettes Invitational.
Starting on the 26th and continuing through March 2 — pausing while the Liukin and American Cups are competing — will be the Greater Greensboro Invitational, a regional JO event in which almost 100 gyms/clubs are scheduled to compete. The GGI is probably attracting more interest and participation than usual because for the first time it will be a qualifier for the Liukin Cup. The final spots will be filled from among the gymnasts competing in the Greater Greensboro.
